The Book
Isaac Levitan (1860-1900) was one of the greatest Russian 19th-century landscape painters. Born in Lithuania, this son of a poor railway official moved to Moscow in the early 1870s. This book is a fitting tribute to the work of this brilliant artist, whose views of the Volga and the woods and fields of Northern Russia are so evocative. The light and sky in such paintings as Eternal Rest (1894), Cloudy Day (1895), The Volga, a Calm Day (1895), and Stormy Day (1897), have an almost Impressionist quality to them. Levitan was certainly influenced by his contemporaries in the West, since he travelled to Europe several times.
The Author
Alexei Feodorov-Davydov was an art historian who studied in Kazan. He wrote extensively about Russian landscape painters.
