The Book
Flowers, fruit, meat, or even musical instruments: these are the principal subjects of still lifes. A genre present within the work of modern and contemporary artists the world over, they are often more than simply an exercise in style. They symbolise the transient character of worldly pleasures and of human life, harbouring abundant symbols and allegories within the objects they portray. In contemporary times, still lifes remain a genre frequently practised by painters. Often ridden of their symbolic attributes, they have become perhaps more reflective of the personality and style of their artist.
