The Book
The Dominican Republic occupies the eastern part of the fabled Caribbean island of Hispaniola. Mountainous but stunningly varied, it has at its heart the mighty Cordillera Central and Pico Duarte, the highest point in the Caribbean islands. There are extensive lowlands mostly in the south and to the east of its vibrant capital Santa Domingo, where the melting-pot of its mixed inhabitants gives rise to the colours and swirls of the title.
