Art of Century is a collection of thirty titles which glide through the most significant cultural movements from antiquity to the 21st century. Through its first fives titles, Naive Art, Renaissance Art, Russian Avant-Garde, Symbolism and Art Nouveau, this series offers a new didactic approach to the main currents and major artists who moulded our comprehension of the 21st-century aesthetics.
Symbolism appeared in Europe and the United States between the 1880s and the early 20th century. The Symbolists, fascinated with ancient mythology, attempted to escape the reign of rational thought imposed by science. They wished to transcend the world of the visible and the rational in order to attain the world of pure thought, constantly flirting with the limits of the unconscious.
