The Book
Ivan Shishkin (1832-1898) was the greatest painter of Russian nature scenes, and one of the great landscape painters of the 19th century. He was born among the woodland he loved so much, in the small town of Elabourga, in the Viatka district, near the Kama, a tributary of the Volga. Shishkin has been called "the painter of the Russian forests", but his landscapes include pastures and fields, the Taiga, and the coastal cliffs beside the Gulf of Finland. Almost all of his paintings are to be found in Russia, and this book presents the greatest of them, in a set of glorious colour photographs, supplemented by an informative text, biography, and bibliography. Shishkin's paintings are stunning in their use of light and depiction of running water. The lighting in Shishkin's pictures ranges from sunset and sunrise to midday, and there are evocative scenes in the mist such as Morning in a Pine Forest. This book is a must for the lover of landscapes, not only for the magnificence of the reproductions and the inspiring subject-matter of the paintings, but also for the informative text and other contemporary pictorial material, such as portraits and photographs of Shishkin and his contemporaries.
The Author
Irina Shuvalova is an art historian attached to the department of late-19th and early-20th-century Russian Painting in the Russian Museum in St Petersburg. She has organised many exhibitions of Russian art abroad, and has written extensively on the subject.
